~ Our Story ~
On this page you'll find out about how our stable started and how we work with our horses.
Thank you for your interest!
How it all started
The Silver-Moon Stables were first established in 2005 when the site owner and one of her best friends had a small collection of Grand Champion horses. The stable grew larger and larger untill we decided to make a website for it. The website was in Dutch and just in 2010 we redid the site in English so it would be visited by everyone around the world.
Meanwhile the site owner also started collecting Breyer. The Silver-Moon Stables breyer part was established in 2009. Now we redid this site too and we got into Pedigree Assignment (PA). Nowadays we offer quality stallions and mares for breeding. The stable is running well so expect more stallions and mares to come. Our most prized stallion at the moment is Soliantu, our Egyptian Arabian stallion. He's very dear to us and we hope to see his first foals in 2010 or 2011.
So now you know how this stable was established. We have Partner Stables too, so go check out the Links page for their webadresses.

Facilities
The Silver-Moon Studfarm is a small breeding and training centre based in the high mountain area of North Italy, Europe. Our stable is designed to be the ideal place for breeding-, training- and show horses.
The office is right next to our main entrance as well as the apartments for the stable lads and the house of the stable owner.

Above you can see the inside of the stables. All stalls are very roomy and there's lots of space for the horses to more around. The stables are in 3 different spots on our property so we won't have aggresive stallions because they smell mares around. We have about 20 stables for mares and newborn foals, 20 for geldings and horses in training, 20 for stallions. All stables have their own shower room and solarium.
All the stalls are constructed with steel and strong wood and in all the stalls is placed thick bedding for the horses to sleep on. Usually the very large doors at the 2 ends are open for fresh air in the stables. At the back of each stall, there is a window for more light. It can as well be put open for fresh air. During the day we have light enough in the stables, and at night there are always lamps turned on.
In summer, weather conditions are perfect for the horses. It's nice and sunny outside and they can enjoy a refreshing showers. In winter it usually doesn't get extreemly cold here, though temperatures can drop to a few degrees above freezing and occasionaly we have some snow. In all the stables is a air-conditioning system installed to have the temperature in the stables as pleasent as possible. Also in every stable is a sprinkler system installed in case a fire starts.
Our "Breeding Clinic" is located at the right end of the property. All the breeding processes are carried out there. The clinic has all the equitment to collect semen from the stallions and to let natural covering take place inside. We keep detailed records of what breedings take place at our stable so that we don't have any "oops-foals". Mares from other stables are all given a number, and after the breeding (with the vet's confirmation) the mare is photographed and returned to the stable that owns her. All the pictures of the mares go into the records as well.
All food, hay and shavings are kept in a special little barn. It's perfect for storing the food and hay for winter, and it's easily accesable for delivery trucks.
Among the many facilities we have here, there are also arenas. We have 2 open arenas (for multi-purpose), 1 inside dressage arena and 1 inside jumping arena. In every arena is a medical emergency box for horses with small injuries during riding.

Horse Care
All horses are fed three times a day. Their food depends on their needs and all portions are specially weighed so that every horse gets enough without getting fat. Horses have small stomachs, so the food is given in small portions every time. For foals in the weaning process, there is a special broth which contains milk and all the important nutrients. At 7 o'clock in the morning all horses are fed their first portion. Exercising the horses starts at 9 am. At 3 pm the horses are fed again, and at 8 pm also.
Every horse in the barn is exercised daily. Their workouts depend on their needs and current condition. For each horse is a halter and bridle available, and most of our horses have their own saddle as well. Each horse is brushed thoroughly before and after his/her workout to keep them clean and fresh. If neccesary, horses can be washed in the shower-room and they can also be put in the special Solarium-rooms.
After their workouts, the horses are put in the pastures for a few hours to relax and play a little. Mares with young foals are put out all morning long in the pastures, and the other horses usually join them around 2 o'clock. Around
All horses have their feet "trimmed" every 5 or 6 weeks (depending on the rate of growth). Our farrier gives each horse new shoes when needed.
Mares who are highly pregnant, get more attention to make the pregnancy go smoothly. In the stalls of the mares are cameras installed to know when a mare starts to give birth, but usually there is someone staying in the stables when a mare is in labour.

Breeding Program
At Silver-Moon Studfarm, we're mostly interested in breeding Egyptian Arabians. We feel that these are the most elegant and pure Arabians.
Our breeding program features some of the finest Arabians in Italy. However, we didn't immediately started with breeding Arabians. There was a long road leading up to the point where our love for the breed began.
*This is a semi-fictional history of the breeding program, just made up for fun!*
2000's
When the Silver-Moon Studfarm was first established around 2004/2005, we had some nice geldings from various breeds standing at the stable with which we frequently rode in competitions. We became interested in breeding versatile stock horses who are suited to participate in shows and perform as the best when we saw the awesome power of the American Quarter Horse at races and shows. In Italy, there are not many stock horses such as Quarter Horses, just because people here like the English riding sport better, so they choose warmbloods. We loved the stocky but flashy AQH and APH, so we decided to breed those.
We began with looking around for some nice mares. We visited large stables with stock horses for sale in other countries as well, and we finally found a perfect mare for our breeding program: Treasured Moves. So we bought this gorgeous mare for a good price. Just as we were leaving the stable, we saw a beautiful partbred Arabian mare with her 5/6 Arabian, 1/6 Appaloosa daughter. At once we fell in love with the filly who was called Bint El Nil. She had lovely Leopard appaloosa spots and the flowing movement of the arabian. Exactly what we were looking for! We brought Treasured Moves home to our stable, and half a year later we got Bint El Nil with her mother, Hibah El Maynar. Training both mares was a real joy, and this was when we first fell in love with the Arabian breed. Sadly, Hibah El Maynar was only with us for a very short time, as she was aged 31 already when she came to the stable. She has lived a full 33 years.
Almost 3 years later in 2007, we had 2 fully grown mares ready to breed with, only no stallions to breed them to. We were lucky enough to purchase a quality Quarter Horse stallion called Flashback, but we couldn't afford a Egyptian Arabian stallion to breed to Bint El Nil at once. We had good friends at the Golden Hart Estates stable (formerly Stable For Champions), who helped us out by letting us breed Bint El Nil to one of their stallions, SFC King Of The Desert. At the same time we also got Treasured Moves covered by Flashback, so we had 2 pregnant mares to look after.
In 2009 our mares foaled 2 gorgeous foals called SMS Takoda (SMS Flashback x SMS Treasured Moves) and El Marees (SFC King Of The Desert x SMS Bint El Nil).
In 2009 we also purchased our Egyptian Arabian stallion SMS Soliantu (Ali El Din® x Baraka Habeeba®), who has become our leading sire in the Egyptian Arabian breeding program.
So we had a grand total of 2 stallions, 2 mares and some geldings. These first years were difficult for us to go through, as we didn't get any foals from our horses untill 2009, but after all, it is totally worth it!
2010's
In early 2010 we purchased our first National Show Horse stallion, SMS Bel Fire. He got us into breeding American Saddlebreds and NSHs. We then purchased some warmblood stallions to breed to italian jumper mares.
Everything was going well, but our stable was still very tiny and fairly unknown. We desperately needed some advertising! And so we began showing our horses at different clubs to promote them and their qualities as sires and dams. We've had great success so far with our horses winning Champion and Reserve Champion titles all the time. Soliantu's breeding carreer had started off well with multiple foals on the ground, but we didn't own any Egyptian Arabian mares to put him to at that time, so in late August we purchased a mare for Soliantu: SMS Cairo Rose (Sahlih ® x Bint Iziza (m), by Fol Yasmeen ®). With her already in foal by another stallion, we had to wait til 2011 before she could be covered by Soliantu.
In November 2010, we purchased some new horses (SMS Swift Solution, SMS Sky's On Fire, SMS Mydnite Mysteries, SMS Anck Su Namun) for the stud, which all went smooth and started off our Thoroughbred breeding program. Our stud had also begun showing at the All Brands Model Horse Association (ABMHA) and won champion/reserve champion titles there.
At the end of 2010 our stud had become a little more known. Then the time came for the ABMHA 2010 Champions Show. This is a show in which only the champions and reserve champions of the Monthly Shows may compete. We had been lucky to enter 3 of our horses (SMS Idocus, SMS Morning Glory, SMS Silver Dollar). At first we couldn't believe SMS Idocus became Overall Champion of the Novice Breyer division! Also Morning Glory and Silver Dollar won champion titles! We were thrilled! Idocus became a well known horse, and we hoped for more breedings.
This way, we ended the year of 2010, and stepped into 2011 with a smile on our faces. The year 2011 brought us many good horses and offspring. The stud really took off and bred many foals for other stables all over the world. In that same year, Silver-Moon Studfarm began racing their Thoroughbreds, Arabians and stock horses with the All Breeds Racing Board (ABRB). We had much success, especially with our stallion SMS Sky's On Fire, who became a living race legend on the board. The rest of 2011 passed by in a flash with our horses breeding and showing and racing. It was a busy year.
The beginning of 2012 was much of the same that 2011 had been. The horses continued their success and whe didn't have much to worry about. About halfway into the year, we began our Morgan breeding program with the purchase of the amazing stallion SMS Pedal To The Metal, an American import.
The end of 2012 marked a new period. We decided to include Welsh ponies and Crabbet Arabians in our progams. We made huge purchases of mostly stallions and a few mares. They came in just before the new year and settled in quickly. They carried mostly model-bred bloodlines. On top of that, we bought SMS Dantaar, an Egyptian Arabian stallion with no bloodlines to Nazeer. He was the perfect stallion to complement Soliantu (as he was heavily Nazeer bred). Our Arabian breeding programs became big with many new horses to show. It was a fantastic year and we looked forward to 2013.
